Tuesday “Tempo” Run

T is for Tuesday or based on the way I felt this morning – Tired. Since I did a strength workout Monday morning, I wanted to do some sort of cardio workout on Tuesday. I was not motivated this morning. I tossed around several ideas of running workouts that I could do in a 20-30 minute range before deciding I should just run a high tempo 5k. Every once in a while, I just need to see where I stand when I am not feeling my best.

I honestly surprised myself. My watch wasn’t working right for a better half of the first mile, but I know the route of my usual 3.2 mile loop. I ran through the finish right under 23 minutes. Haven’t I told you before, that it seems like on the days that I really don’t want to work out, I usually perform the best? Maybe it is because I have to focus more? The first question that my husband asked me when I walked in the door was, “Was it worth it?” I would say most definitely. Even if I only got out there for less than thirty minutes, I pushed myself and ultimately set the tone for my day.

photo 1-36Dinner was another quick one. This time we opted for take out.  Again, we didn’t have time to make a big dinner for leftovers on Sunday.  I had an errand to run at the mall, so I picked up Chipotle on the way out.  If you want healthy, quantity this is the place to go.  I have talked about how great my dinners are from Chipotle before, but I can’t tell you enough how fresh the salads are.  Salad above has brown rice, corn salsa, mild salsa, black beans and chicken.

photo 2-36If you need a little more quantity (especially after a tough workout) wrap it up!  My husband literally ordered the same thing as me but wrapped in a tortilla.



Thursday Wrap up + Friday Workout – Chipotle and “Dawn Patrol”

Incredible weather is expected in Charlotte over the next few days. I’m talking highs in the seventies and lows only in the fifties. Perfect weather for an outdoor workout. Since I got my run in early on Thursday morning, I had time in the afternoon to take a stroll with my daughter. The trees are finally starting to turn green. It doesn’t get much more beautiful than this.

Since we typically run out of leftovers by Tuesday or Wednesday, we usually get a quick dinner to go on Thursday night. For whatever reason, it wasn’t until I was pregnant that I discovered how amazing Chipotle is. The portions are large, but there are so many options to make their entrees healthy. My go to meal is the salad in a bowl: Lettuce, brown rice, black beans, chicken, mild salsa (pico) and corn salsa. There are so many flavors in this meal, it will make you eat every last bite (and not feel guilty). Who doesn’t like to clean their plate?

Friday Flywheel
It is not easy to explain the high that you can get from exercise. I want to touch on how much  a quick workout can change your entire day. The key is making yourself start. I have made up about every excuse in the book not to go out for a workout. Let me just a list a few things:

  • I’m tired.
  •  I would just be going through the motions.
  •  I’m hungover.
  • It’s cold/hot out.
  •  I ate too much, so it will affect my workout.
  • The machine I wanted to use is taken


I have found in all instances, when these thoughts are running through my mind, if I force myself to start, I will almost always feel good about my decision when I’m finishing. It was during a short chat with my sister (in law, but really a sister), who teaches barre in Miami, that we discussed on the days that we didn’t want to do anything at all, we seem to work out the hardest. When you feel like you just want to hit the snooze button, but you had planned to get up, think about what workout you can do that will engage you enough to make you finish.

This is the perfect time to talk about the “Dawn Patrol” crew at Flywheel. I teach a 5:30 AM class on Fridays. After a hard week of work, it is difficult for anyone to get up before 5:30 to make it to class. However, there is this amazing thing that happens between when a rider sets up their bike and the first song ends. There is a solid commitment. Picture this: Lights go down. There is the perception that you are riding alone with an instructor. The music starts, your power number starts increasing, and at that moment you forget that you woke up at 5:00. As the last sprint of the last song is ending, the sense of true happiness sets in. You can walk into work with some swag knowing you have already been more productive than most people in your office.

It is that atmosphere that helps you overcome the desire to sit out. It is also that environment that puts you on a high, builds your confidence, and sets the tone for your day. Big shout out to the riders Friday morning. “Good morning, hate, hate, haters!”
