Friday Favorites

In the blogger world, you will oftentimes see writers posting a few of their current favorite finds on Friday. While I won’t make this a recurring thing, I do feel like in the past few days I have taken several steps outside of my comfort zone, and I have been rewarded. That said, I want to share with you some of my exciting new finds (in hopes that you might also challenge yourself to try something different).

“Rogue” Workouts with Friends

I mentioned last week that I met several of my girlfriends at an outdoor park to do a predominately weights based circuit workout. Guess what? We had such a good time (and most importantly, got such a good workout) that we decided to meet again this week. Once again, we each opted to bring a kettlebell and a set of hand weights. Before the sun had a chance to rise, we completed the following workout.


  • Run with your hand weights to the top of a hill approximately a quarter mile away.
  • Drop your weights and complete 20 burpees.
  • Run back down the hill without your hand weights.
  • Complete the following circuit with your kettlebell at the bottom of the hill:
    • Lunges x20 each leg
    • Push up (one hand elevated on kettlebell) x10 each side
    • Sumo Squat w/row x20
    • Kettlebell swings x20
  • Run to top of the hill.
  • Do 15 burpees.
  • Grab weights and run to the bottom of the hill.
  • Complete the circuit above. This time reps should be 15 instead of 20.
  • Follow the progression above, running to the hill with weights, completing 10 burpees, dropping weights, running back downhill without weights and decreasing total reps to 10 for the circuit.
  • Final set do 5 reps for each sequence.

We hit exactly two miles (at a fast pace for a pregnant person) and completed 50 reps of each exercise. We even got to work out alongside the coveted Jamey Yon running group. Talk about fast. I truly want to emphasize how much more fun and productive exercise can be when you have a good group.

The idea of “juicing” has never been appealing to me. In fact, I have to say, that when I used to see people list the ingredients that they use to make the less than ideal concoctions, it almost made my stomach turn. Most of the things I like, but do they really work together? I’m here to tell you that they do. I don’t know what it was that drug me into Energy Café to stop at the Green Brother Juice kiosk this week, but I have found my favorite uptown treat. Since I obviously know nothing about what vegetables and fruits taste good together, every time that I have gone in there, I have asked the owner (yes, he is there at all hours) to pick a new one for me to try. He never disappoints. Get this. His wife is also pregnant, so he is educated enough to know what will spike glycemic index (ultimately, leaving me feeling like I am on a sugar high).   I haven’t gone all in with the juice yet, but I have tried several smoothies. You can’t go wrong.

Luna Chocolate Dipped Coconut Bars


When I don’t have time to cross the street to hit up Green Brothers, I am forced to dive into my work snack drawer. Let’s face it. Almost all of us have one. In fact, I did a write up when I first started my blog about a lot of the things that I stock in my drawer. When I’m reaching for my afternoon snack, I like to grab something that is low fat and high in fiber, protein and minerals (but also tastes good). These Luna bars are dark chocolate covered and deliciously light. This isn’t just for the ladies. My husband ran the Blue Ridge Relay several weeks ago (a 24 hour relay race, in which he ran almost 25 miles) and he actually snacked on some of these. Long story, but I think he is glad that he gave them a try. Surprisingly, other guys in the van admitted that they steal their wives Luna bars at times!



My daughter turns one in two weeks! Wow, time has flown by. While I try to look forward to our future, I can’t help but look back and how far she has come in just a few months. I am a proud parent that is not biased. I will admit I have a great kid. She has made it easier for my husband and I to continue to live an active, busy lifestyle. I have no idea what the next year will entail, but I certainly will miss her being my sweet baby girl.
