I haven’t been this sick in a long time. As I was going to bed Thursday night, I developed a barking cough that kept me up for hours. No big deal. I am used to pushing through only a few hours of sleep. I rolled out of bed Friday morning, set to teach my 5:30 AM class, when I realized that I didn’t have much of a voice. Typically when this happens, after a good warm up all of that gunk loosens up. This time, it didn’t. I am lucky that I have the most incredible group of riders to teach at Flywheel Charlotte. Thank you for all of your well wishes and putting up with my hoarse voice.
I ended up pushing through another class Saturday morning, before forcing myself to accept the fact that I needed to give myself a break. That meant accepting that I needed some couch time. Lucky for me, the Tour de France is on for several hours a day and we DVR it (so I can watch it in phases). Flywheel Charlotte is doing several Tour rides over the series of the actual Tour. That means that we are building a ride around the profile of a specific stage of the Tour. Looking for a change up and even more competition? These are the rides for you.
As the title of the blog implies, there is no taking off being a mom, but I am very lucky to have an incredible husband to take my full time job down to part time for a few days. To help me out, the whole family went to the farmers market to pick up fruits and veggies for the week. Sometimes the hardest part about having an infant that doesn’t have brothers or sisters is keeping them occupied between nap times. This did the trick!
When I am sick, I want nothing more than some good comfort food, and the last thing that I want to do is cook it. I was incredibly indecisive about what to have for dinner, so we used urbanspoon to search local restaurants. We came up with Pike’s Old Fashioned Soda Shop in South End. I have been here for dessert, but I had never considered going for food. Looking for good comfort food (outside of dessert)? This is it. There is a reason why this place has won so many best of the best awards and been in business since 1931. I ended up getting a simple veggie plate. Funny that the veggie plate includes baked macaroni and cheese.
Since when was macaroni and cheese considered a veggie? I don’t know if it was me not feeling good or the fact that I haven’t had this indulgent side in so long, but I am willing to say that this is some of the best macaroni and cheese that I have had in my life. They literally bake a crust on top of the cheesy noodles. I may have eaten every last bite and left all of the mashed potatoes on my plate.
I gave myself a break before deciding that ice cream would feel good on sore throat. My husband ordered the “special” dessert. Special because it was a hand scooped peach milkshake made from South Carolina grown local peaches. Delicious. I ended up getting a simple chocolate sundae with mint chocolate chip ice cream. Okay, we may have over done it, but it was worth it for one night. I have been working incredibly hard over the past several months. Part of reaching goals in life is letting yourself take a break every once in awhile.
You know a restaurant is good when they can stay open with prices like this. Our entire meal, including an appetizer, two entrees, and two desserts was only $40. You can’t beat the decor either. This place has not lost its edge over the years.
